Pneumatic Conveying System
There are number of industries where the Pneumatic Conveying System are required.
Pneumatic conveying is the movement of Solids through pipe using gas (usual air) as the motive force.
The conveying rate greatly depends on the air to material ratio & material characteristics.
WHY PNEUMATIC CONVEYING???
- With the appropriate choice of system, material can be transported with minimal degradation.
- Little or no exposure of the product to the environment.
- Can transport relatively long distances (several thousand feet).
- Excellent for multiple sources and multiple destinations.
- Ability to transport material which might be air, moisture, etc. sensitive.
- Compared to mechanical conveyors, relative ease in system routing especially elevation changes.
- Interfaces well with a variety of transportation modes – truck, railcars, ships.
- High reliability of system with comparatively few moving parts.
TYPES OF PNEUMATIC CONVEYING SYSTEMS.
A. Dilute phase pneumatic conveying system
- Dilute Phase Pneumatic system used in higher air velocities as compared to dense phase conveying approx. 15 m/s to 25 m/s.
- The air pressure or vacuum required is lower.
- Due to higher conveying velocities, the attrition or breakage of material in the pipeline is higher due to more intensive impact on the metal surfaces.
- The distance that can be covered is limited, typically up to a maximum of 100-200 meter, depending on the material conveyed.
- The amount of automation required and dependency on various valves is lower due to the simplicity of the system.
B. Dense phase pneumatic conveying system
- The dense phase pneumatic conveying is lower in air velocities as compared to dilute phase pneumatic conveying and ranging from 1 m/s to 12 m/s
- The air pressure required is higher.
- Due to lower conveying velocities, the attrition of material in the pipeline is lower due to less intensive impact on the metal surfaces.
- In dense conveying system distance can be covered typically up to 1000-2000 meter depending on the material conveyed.
- The costing of dense system is higher as compared to dilute phase pneumatic system due to complexity of components.
